Whatcom County consists of 2126 square miles and is located in the northwest corner of Washington State along the border with British Columbia, Canada. The largest city and county seat is Bellingham. The other major incorporated communities are Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Everson and Sumas.
Elevation ranges from sea level to a height of 10,788 at summit of Mt. Baker. The eastern portion consists of the Mt. Baker Wilderness area and a portion of the North Cascades National Park. This section is mainly rugged mountainous area with limited access. The Mt. Baker Ski area is considered one of the best in the Northwest, and a center for snowboarding enthusiasts from around North America.
The western portion of the county consists of all the population centers, many lakes and wetlands, and thousands of acres of prime agricultural lands.
