SAMPLE LETTER - PLEASE EDIT THIS TO PROVIDE THE MESSAGE IN YOUR OWN WORDS

Dear ------,

I am writing to urge you to take action to protect the more than 500 family-wage jobs that still exist today at the Alcoa Intalco Works Plant in Whatcom County.

Intalco is on the brink of closure because of inequitable power rates being charged by the Bonneville Power Administration.  This closure would mean a substantial economic hit on Whatcom County at a time when our unemployment rates are climbing at an alarming rate, and non-profit agencies, schools and local governments are struggling to make ends meet.  Our community cannot afford to lose this major employer, which provides over $110 million in economic benefit to our area..

At this time when federal and state governments are spending billions of dollars on economic stimulus to generate jobs, Intalco is not asking for a stimulus hand-out or special treatment, just a remedy to this inequitable situation to protect existing jobs.

Please show your commitment to your constituents by ensuring BPA serves Intalco power at a rate comparable to other NW customers.

Sincerely,
